Ah yes…the Academy has always been stylistically conservative but thematically very liberal! (2001: A Space Odyssey should have won Best Picture, too, but wasn’t even nominated–“Oliver!” won that year. The Oscars, I think, are best looked at as more of a snapshot in time, than as an assessor of artistic merit, although they do try their best. For some really incisive historical perspective you should check out some of those Be Kind Rewind you tube videos).
I rarely agree with the Oscars, so much so, I can’t and don’t watch them ever. You’re picks are very good, except I would have to say Forrest Gump deserved best picture, and I’m a huge Tarantino fan.
The Academy has in the past has been shady, and in a world unto itself and really out of touch. Which culminated in disasters such as Oscar so White, and absolutely criminal fiasco which robbed Saving Private Ryan of the Accolade it rightly deserved. That being said it sometimes hits the nail on the head right. Rocky deserved best picture so did Lord of Things: Return of The King. as well as The Hurt Locker. They have a long way to go but they getting better.
I am with you about 80% . Excellent list.
There are some Best Picture winners which still annoys me after all these years. “Dances With Wolves” is a great movie, but it never should have won the big award over “Goodfellas” which remains my favorite movie after all these years. “Shakespeare in Love” is a brilliant motion picture, but its win over “Saving Private Ryan” spoke more about Harvey Weinstein’s treatment of Oscar Season as war more than anything else. And yes, it would have been great to see “The Tree of Life” triumph at the Oscars, but some things are sadly not meant to be.
So many greats and classics that lost out to lesser films. And there are some films where it’s just too close and could go either way. Looking at this list, the one that stands out for me is Crash. I don’t get it it. After all these years, it still bothers me that Crash won the Oscar. I watched it. At no point during its run time did I ever feel it should even be in contention for an award of any kind. I honestly don’t think Brokeback Mountain was good enough to win either, but I enjoyed it far more than I did Crash. I could watch Brokeback Mountain again but, if I never saw Crash again, I would be ok with that. Shakespeare in Love and The English Patiebt are two others I just don’t understand how they one, especially given the competition that year. Thin Red Line and Fargo lose out to those two films?! C’mon.
The Oscar’s rarely make sense. Someone else in the comments said that the Oscar’s are a snapshot of where we are as a society rather than being a statement on the intrinsic artistic value of a film. I would agree with that statement. It’s a shame though as it should be about the art.
Great list, Rob. Very interesting to see how many movies you’d think would be no-brainer wins as they’ve held up through time, compared to the movies that actually won. I always thought it was crazy that The Master never got nominated for Best Picture, though it definitely should have won imo. Didn’t win any acting Oscars, though it did get nominated for 3. At least it got some credit, but not nearly enough.
With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any ways to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d definitely appreciate it.|
