The Academy Awards will be televised a little earlier than they were last year, but it’s already set to be a failure after years of declining ratings, Twitter backlash from the Academy’s decision not to air certain categories, and a lack of interest even though everyone is always putting their input on how they feel about such an awards show that is labeled meaningless. For the last five years, the AMPAS has been making changes to the status quo to make it more inclusive and to honor films more based on art than popularity. After Green Book won the Oscar over Roma, it quickly felt like the AMPAs were back to their old habits, only for them to make corrections in the last few years by awarding Parasite and Nomadland. If The Power of the Dog walks away over Coda, the film will more than likely join the ranks of recenet Best Picture winners Moonlight, Nomadland, Parasite, and Birdman as being a respected Best Picture winner. If audience-favorite Coda gets the upset, it will more than likely be under scrutiny in years to come for being the unearned Best Picture winner. Tragically, around 8 categories will not be televised–and the most eagerly awaited category is Best Original Screenplay. Many are cheering for Paul Thomas Anderson to finally walk away with his long overdue Oscar. However, Kenneth Branagh now appears to be the front-runner with his wins at the Golden Globes and P.T Anderson failed to get a clean sweep from the WGA’s. Perhaps P.T. Anderson can pull off an upset, but if he doesn’t, hopefully one day he will win for a later movie. Ratings will certainly be lower than the previous years, and the awards just don’t have the excitement or stock that they once had. No matter what happens, the great films will march on with or without awards. Here are mine and Noah’s Oscar predictions for a declining ceremony down below.
